How to Book a Makeup Artist

Hi! I’m professional hair and makeup artist Ruth! I’ve been a pro MUA for 10+ years and a question I see pop up is, “How do I book a makeup artist?”. I’m happy to answer that question here!

How to book a Makeup Artist

  1. First, how do you find a makeup artist you like? We’ve all got Google, Instagram, or TikTok these days and you can find an artist on either one! On all three platforms, artists will include hashtags and specific wording that will help you find them! You can look for: “makeup artist near me” or “makeup artist *Los Angeles” (*Insert your town). These will help you find artists in your area.

  2. Next, click on a few different artists to see what kind of work they offer. Is it natural glam? Is it full glam? Do they only do weddings? Do you like their style of makeup? Before you even reach out, MAKE SURE YOU SEE THEIR WORK!!! (I can’t tell you the number of clients who reach out to me without seeing my work first!! *palm to forehead!!) Artists will normally have a signature look. This is the look that they do most often and people flock to them for.

  3. If you’ve seen their work and are loving what you see, check to see if they list any pricing out (mostly websites here). Now is the time to reach out! Be sure to inquire with your full name, phone number, best email, date and timing you’ll need, and what you’re getting ready for!

Booking your Makeup Look

Good makeup artists will require a retainer to secure their time. It’s usually 15-20% and applies to your booking day of. When the retainer is in your booking in secured!

How early should you book?

I recommend booking as soon as you know you want to hire your artist. Artist run different schedules, but my recommendation is 30 days out should give you the best booking flexibility.

Prepping for a Great Glam

Arrive with a clean, moisturized face and leave any skin blemishes alone!

  • Arrive on time and plan to spend your full glam time in the makeup chair.

  • Keep phone calls & texting to a minimum during services.

  • Wear a loose neck, button up shirt, or robe during glam if changing later.

  • Brush your teeth, apply contacts and eye drops before arrival.

  • If any specific products are preferred, bring those to your glam.
